In an ongoing battle with the Biden Administration, Governor Abbott of Texas insists that his state should not, and will not, pay for the Co-Vid testing of undocumented migrants coming over the border, and then being released by the Federal Government into Texas. He maintains that, since it’s the Federal Government that has opened the floodgates of illegal immigration, the Federal Government should be responsible for all aspects of testing, including the logistics of getting it done, cost, compliance, etc. The Governor states that releasing untested migrants into the general population is dangerous for the communities in which they land. In response, the Biden administration has responded by saying there is no evidence that the released immigrants are endangering the population, but Abbott quoted two recent reports, (US News & World Report and the Washington Post) which stated that in Brownsville alone at least 108 Co-Vid positive migrants have arrived.
The Biden plan was to use FEMA money to ensure testing and manage those with positive results, but the allocation of the funding needed to be approved by the state. Abbott stated that “Texas supports legal immigration but will not be an accomplice to the open border policies that cause, rather than prevent, a humanitarian crisis in our state and endanger the lives of Texans…”, later adding that Texas “will not aid a program that makes our country a magnet for illegal immigration.”
In supporting his position, Governor Abbot points to the incredible progress that Texas has made in the fight against Co-Vid with the administration of 1,000,000+ vaccines per week, and indicated that more than one half of Texas’ seniors have been vaccinated. He also stated that the current infected level is now less than last November. His order allows Counties to alter the order if numbers begin to head in an unacceptable direction within their jurisdiction.
