The Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection agreement was signed June 10 by President Biden and leaders of Latin American countries. The goal of the Declaration is “to strengthen national, regional, and hemispheric efforts to create the conditions for safe, orderly, humane, and regular migration and to strengthen frameworks for international protection and cooperation.” The Ninth Summit of the Americas acknowledged that immigration is a regional issue and cooperation is needed from all countries involved.
The non-legally binding agreement commits the United States to accept 20,000 refugees from Latin America over the next two years who are fleeing political and economic distress in their home countries. The number of seasonal visas accepted from Haiti and Central America was increased by 11.500. Other countries have also agreed to increase efforts to accept migrants before they reach the United States.
