New York State May Help Immigrants Facing Deportation
Gov. Paterson’s Plan to Accelerate Consideration and Pardons to Legal Immigrants for Old Minor Criminal Offenses.
According to the New York Times, N.Y. Governor David A. Paterson announced this week that the state would accelerate consideration of pardons for legal immigrants for old, minor convictions, which would otherwise render them deportable from the United States. Governor Paterson will establish a five-member panel to review the few cases currently pending, however, the state expects an influx of hundreds of new pardon requests by the end of the year.
