Beginning May 20, 2022, individuals who want to request Temporary Protected Status under the Afghanistan designation can apply to the DHS and USCIS. An estimated 72,500 currently in the United States may qualify for the status. Individuals must demonstrate continuous residence in the United States since March 15, 2022, and a continuous presence in the United States since May 20, 2022. The designation, however, does not apply to those who arrived in the US after March 15, 2022 or are currently not residing in the United States. Afghan nationals who arrived in the US through the Operations Allies Welcome program may also qualify.
