Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s termination of TPS for Venezuelans and Haitians has been declared unlawful by US District Judge Edward Chen stating “The Secretary’s action in revoking TPS was not only unprecedented in the manner and speed in which it was taken but also violates the law”. The decision could affect the status of about 600,000 Venezuelans and about 500,00 Haitians some of whom will need to have their status renewed by next week. The documents that need renewal include their Temporary Protected Status applications, work permits and drivers’ licenses. Non-renewal could halt the ability to work in this country.
A statement released by the Department of Homeland Security said, in part, “For decades the TPS program has been abused, exploited, and politicized as a de facto amnesty program. Its use has been all the more dangerous given the millions of unvetted illegal aliens the Biden Administration let into this country,”.
It is expected that the Trump Administration will appeal.
